With the city locked in a stretch of near-unbearable heat, NYC’s rooftop hotel pools have quietly become essential. These aren’t just perks for out-of-towners—they’re modern-day refuges for locals looking to reclaim a toasty weekend or summer afternoon. Just book a lounger via ResortPass, bring your laptop or your friends, and your average day can transform into an out-of-office getaway.
Some of the best NYC hotel pools feel like true escapes—leafy, quiet, above it all. Others are energetic, built for golden-hour drinks and group hangs. All offer relief, in one form or another. At 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, the pool sits tucked among greenery, with sweeping views of Manhattan and just enough shade to stretch the day. The Rockaway Hotel, a short Subway ride from Manhattan, brings beach air, frozen drinks, and a crowd that’s comfortably in weekend mode—even on a Tuesday. For something louder, Virgin Hotels' NoMad location turns its rooftop into a scene: DJs, clever cocktails, and sun-drenched lounging with Empire State Building views that never get old. And the subdued—but no less stylish—Equinox Hotel at Hudson Yards offers a sleek, minimalist pool deck perfect for a midday focus or early-evening recovery.
From low-key retreats to lively rooftops, these pools offer the city’s most refreshing balance: part escape, part indulgence. And lucky for you, they're all fully within reach. (Has remote work ever looked so appealing?) As summer unfolds, we’ll keep scouting more standout spots to add to this list. Wherever you are, a refreshing dip is never too far away.
FAQ:
What do I need to know about ResortPass for NYC hotel pools?
ResortPass is a great way to enjoy luxurious hotel pool experiences without booking an overnight stay, providing easy access to some of New York City's splashiest spaces. Membership is not required—simply book a day pass or specific seat online (as far in advance as possible) and you’ll enjoy full access to the pool, facilities, and sometimes additional amenities like poolside service or spa treatments. Most hotels post general day pass information on their websites, but I’ve found calling is the most straightforward way to find out what's needed to book. - Courtesy Dream Downtown
Dream Downtown, by Hyatt
Location: Meatpacking District
Vibe: Miami meets NYC
Access: Available for hotel guests and those who purchase day passesUnlike most of the glitzy outdoor pools you’ll find in Manhattan, Dream Downtown’s is not on a rooftop. But what it may lack in skyline views, it more than makes up for in atmosphere. Encased in surrounding high-rises, the second-floor pool feels like a tiny slice of coastal life—a beachy oasis completely separate from the bustling metropolis outside. The pool area (and the distinctive, quintessentially New York hotel that it belongs to) feels almost like a chic, actually nice hostel, one where 20- and 30-somethings can riff with the staff, be surrounded by larger-than-life works of art, and enjoy the city while still indulging in spectacular accommodations and total privacy at the end of the day. Here, guests can take a dip in the glass-bottom pool and enjoy ice-cold cocktails. Pop music filters around at the perfect volume, loud enough to keep the party going but still low enough to hear those around you. On the weekends, however, it becomes a full-out pool party, with free-flowing music and drinks. While the majority of the guests here are young and artsy (just like the hotel itself), there are still a scattered number of families and older couples eager to soak up some NYC sunshine. —Jamie Spain, travel bookings commerce editor
- Virgin Hotels New York City
Virgin Hotels New York City
Location: NoMad, Manhattan
Vibe: A chill escape with very un-chill views
Access: Hotel guests, non-guests must book via ResortPass; reservations required for all seatsI popped over to the Virgin Hotel NYC in the middle of the afternoon on what was determined to be the city’s hottest day in the past 12 years. Thankfully (miraculously), I had a cabana booked at their Pool Club, the only outdoor space I could be convinced to travel to in the 100-degree heat. Sitting 60 feet above Broadway in NoMad, with gobsmacking views of the Empire State Building, greenery galore, and a playlist you’d expect from a beach club in Ibiza, the roof deck is free for hotel guests and open to the paying public. Most visitors are clearly there just to relax, but children aren’t permitted past 11:30 a.m., so you’re free to get your party on should you desire. You’ll find servers pacing around the average-sized swimming hole in colorful exercise dresses, taking orders from the Pool Club menu. Drinks are delivered quickly, as are dishes that range from light bites, à la tuna tartare and fries, to full-on meals like lobster rolls and smashburgers. I nursed a Prickly Fizz mocktail while submerged in the warm pool water, but I plan to return for one of their four frozen cocktails on another sweltering afternoon. Between the elevated eats, clubby feel, and killer photo opps, it seems only necessary to bring a group of girlfriends along for my next city swim. —Hannah Chubb, senior commerce editor
- David Mitchell/TWA Hotel
TWA Hotel
Location: Jamaica, Queens
Vibe: A nod to the '60s, inspired by the South of France, dangling over the edge of a JFK runway. (It’s like a Beach Boys song from your fever dreams.)
Access: Hotel guests, day passes availableThis is the type of pool you visit to swim and be seen. The experience begins at the entrance. As soon as the elevator door opens to the roof, a large marquee sign studded with lights points to the double doors leading to the pool, promising a “Surfin’ Safari at the TWA Hotel” beyond their threshold. If that wasn’t enough to tempt you, the surrounding surfboards, '60s movie posters, and cheeky split-flap display board—one of many at the hotel—also tease what’s ahead. Ever committed to the theme, the deck is pristine, Kubrick white. Cherry-red striped towels sling over the shoulders of guests and the arms of beach chairs, adding to the retro aesthetic. The pool itself has steps lined with that same red leading to the centerpiece, a blown-out TWA logo on the pool floor. The tiles lay like the scales of a large, gorgeous fish. These small details serve as the framing for the view we’re all here for: JFK’s Runway 4 Left/22 Right, one of the airport’s busiest. Witnessing plane after plane take off into the sky is a mesmerizing reminder of the not-so-small miracle of flight. Much has been said of the TWA pool and the greater hotel it’s ensconced within. Ersatz? Perhaps. But when’s the last time you remember having this much fun at an airport? —Kat Chen, editorial assistant, destinations
- The Dominick Hotel
The Dominick Hotel
Location: Hudson Square, Manhattan
Vibe: Lively, social, and family-friendly (with more tourists than staycationers)
Access: Hotel guests, non-guests must book through ResortPass; cabanas (which are part of the restaurant next to the pool) are available to book on ResyOn the seventh floor of The Dominick Hotel lies a narrow but spacious pool overlooking Hudson Square, in Lower Manhattan. Behind the pool, you’ll find a few quiet and secluded cabanas, which offer an escape from the buzz of the main deck. With walls of flowers and vines, the cabanas all feature a couch, two chairs, and a center table for bites and drinks. Especially after a chaotic commute, you'll notice how serene and quiet the cabana area is, despite overlooking busy Sixth Avenue. The space was also exceptionally staffed: Before I could sit down, I was offered a towel for my chair and a complimentary fruit plate. I then ordered (and highly recommend) the fresh lobster rolls with caviar and the heirloom tomato salad, which came out promptly. Since a lifeguard is present at all times, parents are able to chat while their children play, and the narrow shape of the pool and multiple staircases allow for guests to have plenty of room between each other while cooling off. With soundproof walls blocking the pool from the building’s edge, it's a space that offers an opportunity for stillness (and a few drinks, of course) in one of Manhattan’s most booming neighborhoods. –Erik Buckingham, commerce producer

Equinox Hotel New York
Location: Hudson Yards, Manhattan
Vibe: Chill and healthful
Access: First come, first serve for hotel guests and Equinox club members“It’s what makes life interesting,” Gwyneth Paltrow once said, “finding the balance between cigarettes and tofu.” Such is the vibe on Equinox Hotel New York’s pool deck, which is part of their fitness club and shared between gym members and hotel guests. Here, in the looming shadow of the shiny, shiny Vessel, you can swim laps and then plop down on a lounger and order a cocktail from Broken Coconut (which is full service). You won't find a burger or fries on the menu here, though—it’s all smoothies, salads, and poke bowls, the latter two doled out in generous servings. In fall, winter, and early spring, the lounge chairs are replaced by barrel saunas. —Charlie Hobbs, associate editor

ModernHaus SoHo
Location: SoHo, Manhattan
Vibe: A spacious SoHo rooftop hideaway for easy-going crowds looking to relax
Access: Hotel guest access (weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; weekends from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.)When I went to this glistening pool, 18 floors above street level, on a lazy summer Friday, I looked out at 270-degree views of downtown Manhattan and, as the current TikTok parlance goes, almost forgot this is the whole point. Of the fact that we are in the greatest city in the world, the pool area at ModernHaus SoHo is a fantastic reminder. The outdoor square footage was comfortable enough for me and 10 other hotel guests, and the adjacent pool bar had plenty of space inside for some shade. At night, the bar converts into a public hot spot with security at the door (no swimming permitted at night), but daytimes here are calm and easy-going. Though it’s not a heated pool and more of a dip-your-toes-and-torso affair (experienced swimmers will clear its length in two backstrokes, at most), it’s still a relaxing place to be. For my blissful couple of hours, I alternated between sitting at the pool’s edge and on a sun lounger, drinking a $22 cocktail and reading a biography about the writer Michel de Montaigne called How to Live. My answer? Just like this. —Matt Ortile, associate editor

Royalton Park Avenue
Location: NoMad, Manhattan
Vibe: Lively and family-friendly until 6 p.m., when it transitions to adults only
Access: Hotel guests only on weekends; day passes available during the week via the hotel's Seven24 membershipAt the Royalton Park Avenue’s rooftop pool, you nearly forget you’re right in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world—that is, until you look up and are met head-on with views of one of its most iconic high rises, the Empire State Building. The lively NoMad oasis was bustling on my recent visit, with families, couples, and staycationers alternating between the many lounge chairs, sofas, and the cool water itself. The staff is attentive, circling regularly to see who needs what, and will deliver your beer, margarita, or a frozen espresso martini straight to your corner of the pool. There’s an accessibility entrance, a row of chairs under an overhang for those who prefer shade, and a cluster of large sofa beds best suited for groups (reservations are for a three-hour block and come with a food and beverage minimum). If you come hungry, you won’t be disappointed—the poolside menu boasts fun finger foods like spicy tuna on crispy rice, mini lobster rolls, and watermelon-feta skewers. It’s open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; if you’re staying overnight, come early to stake out a good spot, as it can fill up fast. —Madison Flager, associate commerce director

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
Location: Dumbo, Brooklyn
Vibe: Abuzz with groups of friends, trendy young folk, and influencers alike
Access: Hotel guests and swanky visitor day passes (for those 21 and up), with tables best for larger groups via Seven RoomsAt 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, it’s all about the views—especially when it comes to the rooftop pool. Sure, you’re not going to be swimming laps or diving into the deep end—this uniquely shaped plunge pool is just three feet deep. But if you’re anything like me during my stay here, you’ll be far too busy taking in the sights to want to do much else. Hop in and park yourself right at the edge where you won’t tire from gazing across the East River, watching the ferry put across the water. With panoramic views of lower Manhattan (peep the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the US), the Statue of Liberty (almost as good a view as on the Staten Island Ferry), and the gorgeous Brooklyn Bridge, it's not uncommon to see hotel guests posing for a picture in or near the water. If you’re hungry, the pool shares the rooftop with Harriet’s Rooftop; and come night, there’s no better spot to watch the sun set over the Manhattan skyline. For non-hotel guests, the hotel is now offering Sky Swim Lounge tables. Nestled just below the pool deck, the lounge tables provide an exclusive oasis where guests can bask in the sun and take dips in the rooftop pool. The table minimums start at $800, so the more to split the bill with, the merrier.) —Jamie Spain, travels bookings editor

The William Vale
Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Vibe: Vacation-mode, cocktails and tanning with views
Access: Hotel guests, ResortPass, and Vale Pool Memberships (offered on a daily and season-long basis); cabanas, loveseats, and pergolas can be reserved on ResortPassIf you live in New York City, you were likely taken to the William Vale when you first moved here for the dazzling city view from Westlight. If you are a visitor, someone likely told you to do the same. While Westlight is on top of the high-rise hotel, the William Vale pool is a little more grounded, on the fourth-floor patio. The views of the Manhattan skyline are still there, and the space is impressive, city-speaking—this is no teeny-tiny NYC pool setup. There are plenty of umbrellas and chaise lounges, and cabanas of various sizes, so it doesn’t feel like the hunger games to get a spot. Vibey tunes play all day—but not too loud— and you’ll see a mix of New Yorkers (likely using ResortPass) sitting in the shade and typing away on their laptops, while other “self-employed” Brooklynites work on their tans and wave hello to the bartenders they recognize. The out-of-towners are usually embracing the space, ordering boozy drinks in pineapple-shaped cups or counting on a bottle of bubbly to keep them hydrated. Plus, there’s programming: Sometimes, outdoor movies play in the evenings; there’s a nearby sauna that surely hits in the colder months. And the food, while priced as is expected at most pools, is quite decent, spanning from tuna and crispy rice to little Caesar salad bites to a chicken sandwich with a craveable gochujang-based sauce. —Megan Spurrell, associate articles director

Gansevoort Meatpacking
$$ |Readers' Choice Awards 2017, 2018, 2019, 2024
Location: Meatpacking, Manhattan
Vibe: Moderately lively (families before 12 p.m., then adults only)
Access: Hotel guests and Seven24 membership membersThe vibe at the Gansevoort's compact-but-mighty rooftop pool is set with a bumping tropical house playlist, but it's mellow enough that you can close your eyes as you get a tan (and everyone is definitely trying to get a tan). The crowd has a lot of families with young kids in the mornings, but when they get the boot at noon—and things shift to adults-only—you'll spot pods of friends drinking Champagne, solo travelers soaking in rays. On a weekday, you’ll find New Yorkers with membership access working poolside in bikinis. The age range is wide here, from 20-somethings chatting about the night ahead, to retired couples ordering another cocktail in a blue cup. The drink and snack menu is no encyclopedia, but fresh poke bowls and basics like French fries hit the spot mid-day. If it gets too toasty, move over to the poolside bar for some shade—or come at sunset, when views over the Hudson, West Village, and bustling Meatpacking will give you more than enough to focus on. —Megan Spurrell, associate articles director
